#IWD2025: Creative Women - Saira Hussain

International Women's Day (IWD) is an annual global event celebrating women and their achievements.

First initiated in 1911, IWD has since grown into a global movement encouraging us to stand up for a more diverse, equitable and inclusive world, free of discrimination and stereotypes.

According to World Economic Forum at the current rate of progress, gender parity is only expected to be achieved in 2158, five generations from now.

This year's campaign theme is #AccelerateAction, emphasising the important need for us to take swift and decisive steps to speed up the rate of action, so we can achieve gender parity sooner.

As part of our #IWD2025 "Creative Women" Series, meet Saira Hussain, an architectural designer.

Saira is the Co-Founder of HAD & CO, an architecture and planning practice with bases throughout the North West.

Saira started her first business in 2011 at the age of 23 and was later joined by her current co-founder Nixie Edwards. HAD & CO practice has won several awards. In 2023, Saira was recognised as an inspirational female business owner in STEM and Construction, at an event held at the House of Lords.

Saira, what is your connection to Lancashire?

I was born and raised in Burnley, Lancashire, and I take great pride in that.

In 2011, I established my first architectural practice on Colne Road in Burnley.

No matter where I travel, whether it's across the country or abroad, Burnley will always be home, and I am extremely proud to represent my hometown.

What inspires or motivates your creative practice?

My creative practice is inspired by a bunch of things.

Art, culture, the people around me, my environment, my kids, and both my memories and dreams of the future.

It's all about how I imagine it could be.

Any advice for women starting out or making their mark in the creative industries?

Seeking out and engaging with the stories of other women who have followed similar paths can be incredibly motivating.

Watching documentaries about Zaha Hadid in younger years was particularly inspiring; as an Iraqi woman excelling in architecture, her success was monumental.

As an architectural designer how do you think we can accelerate action to build momentum in addressing systemic barriers and biases?

As an architectural designer, I believe we can accelerate action to address systemic barriers and biases by implementing a multifaceted approach.

First, we need to prioritise mentorship and sponsorship programs that specifically support women and ethnic minorities. This could include networking opportunities, workshops, and internships that provide exposure and experience in the field.

In terms of changing dynamics, I do see a shift happening, albeit slowly.

Many firms are beginning to recognise the importance of diversity not just as a moral imperative but also as a driver of innovation and creativity within design. For instance, I’ve observed more platforms being built for underrepresented voices, such as forums or exhibitions that highlight diverse architectural designers and their work.

However, while progress is being made, it’s crucial that we continue to keep the conversation alive and advocate for systemic change, we can cultivate an environment that empowers all designers, regardless of gender or ethnicity, to thrive.

About International Women's Day

International Women's Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.

IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people.

It is not country, group or organisation specific. IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere.

This year's theme for #IWD2025 is #AccelerateAction.

According to data from the World Economic Forum, at the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158, (roughly five generations), to reach full gender parity.

Focusing on the need to Accelerate Action emphasises the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality.

#IWD2025 #AccelerateAction

It calls for increased momentum and urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women face, both in personal and professional spheres.

So, together, let's Accelerate Action and speed up the rate of progress worldwide

Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women's equality and  accelerate Action for gender equality.
