Creative Lancashire X AIRE Studio - Winter Moon
"I would describe myself as as artist, designer and maker that enjoys exploring craft through collaboration."
Established in 2016, AIRE was conceived by Lancashire artist and designer, Claire Williams, with the sole purpose of bringing modern magnificence to walls with nostalgic design.
The design for our Festive project 2024 draws inspiration from the recent Museum of The Moon installation by Luke Jerram, enjoyed by thousands at Blackburn Cathedral and millions more around the world.
Claire Wililams is an artist, designer and maker who enjoys exploring craft through collaboration.
"I am a surface print designer who creates patterns for wallpaper and textiles. My career began as an employed designer in a studio before setting up my own practice as a self employed artist. The current focus of my work reflects my Lancashire heritage and the natural world of local flora. I explore printmaking through painterly media and rework drawings digitally. More recently I have used textiles and print design as narratives to communicate stories of heritage past. I am from a northern textile town which has seen many demographical changes due to the changing scape of textile manufacturing which provides an ongoing stimulus. I explore technological advances alongside traditional approaches to explore potentials of design."
"The Museum of the Moon installation by Luke Jerram provided me with many elements of inspiration. Whilst the installation was vast in scale, I decided to respond in a smaller, more delicate way to encourage the viewer to be drawn in.
"The cycle and phases of the moon allowed me to develop repetitive patterns that were translucent in parts so that shadows were cast onto underlying materials. The resulting pieces reminded me of punch pattern cards used for knitting and weaving which aptly reflected my Lancashire heritage and textile routes."
"I also wanted to capture the reflective nature of light to acknowledge the illumination of gentle stirrings that often create meaningful shifts."
"As this piece was created during the full Cold or Winter moon, it was important to reflect upon the time of year and what this means in terms of reconnection and inspiration in order to connect, share and glow."
