Black Artisans: Meet the Makers & Workshop Demonstrations - Adaesi Ukairo & Judith Annakie-Eriksen

The Black Artisans showcases and celebrates established UK based Black Artisans through a travelling photography exhibition. The project, initiated by photographer Jo Sealy, aims to enlighten, educate and inspire people to explore craft as a potential field of work - or as a leisure interest.

To mark the end of the Black Artisans Exhibition at Haworth Art Gallery we present a day of maker demos and relaxed Q&A talks with Adaesi Ukairo (Artist, Metalsmith & Sculptor) and Judith Annakie-Eriksen (Ceramicist).

You’ll get the chance to understand more about their practices, watch demos and workshops.

Adaesi Ukairo makes contemporary sculptural work from copper and brass as they are warm reflectors of light, and possess the unique qualities of malleability and strength which enable experiment and exploration, essential to her creative practice. Using hammers and forming stakes she raises her sculptural forms from flat sheet, moulding and shaping intuitively, creating distinct, highly textured and patinated pieces of work.

Judith Annakie-Eriksen fell in love with ceramics in the 1990s and became a full time working artist, following her retirement from a successful communications and PR career in 2019. Her finished work can be categorised as functional art in the form of upmarket tableware. Her aesthetic is influenced by the organic and simple forms found in Scandinavian design, the repetitive patterns applied to African textiles and modern jewellery design.

The approximate running times are as follows:

  • 12.30 Judith Annakie-Eriksen (45 mins)
  •   1.45  Adaesi Ukairo (45 mins)
  •   2.45 Q&A (30 mins)

The demo sessions and Q&A talks are free to attend. Places are limited so please pre-book via Eventbrite
