Jonathan Ball

Design Associate - Design Council

Jonathan has designed consumer products as diverse as toys and toilet seats as well as industrial products for the oil, fishing and forestry sectors. He is an independent design strategist with a specialism in the development and delivery of design and business development programmes. Current customers include the UK’s Design Council where he has helped shape and deliver the business, science and public services offers. He has also been jointly responsible for the recruitment and coaching of the Design Council’s Design Associates.

As a Design Associate he has worked with many of the Designing Demand programme manufacturing and service business clients. He worked with Aberdeen University to accelerate the commercialisation of new technologies and with The Children’s Society, NHS Trafford and the Home Office focusing on innovation and efficiencies in the delivery of not for profit and public services.

Working with Justin Knecht, with whom he developed and delivered the user-centred programme Innovation by Design in Ireland, he introduced the Business Support Canvas, a strategic approach to the evaluation, development and delivery of publicly funded support programmes. The Canvas has been tested in the early stages of developing business support programmes in Estonia and Poland and is now being used in the development of consulting businesses.

He has been successfully applying human-centred design techniques to the development of products and services for over twenty years. This experience has led to him working worldwide as an instructor with LUMA-Institute the Pittsburgh based Human Centred Design education and innovation organisation.
