Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

Creative XMAS: Advent Project 2018

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

In a slight departure from our previous Creative XMAS Advent Projects we've collaborated with award-winning filmakers Northern Heart artist Daneil Davidson.

Colour of Music is Daniel's latest creative venture. He is currently exhibiting his first solo show at Prism Contemporary Art Gallery in Blackburn and has work on display at Artistry House in Preston, as part of the Atlantic Contemporary Art Collection.

Colour of Music explores the relationship between sound and colour. Focusing specifically on a range of sound frequencies that if raised by 40 octaves, have corresponding consonant colours.

This concept explores a crossover of senses, similar to the condition of synaesthesia, or more specifically, chromesthesia (sound to colour).

The colour bars are created using pitch to colour calculators, plotting the chord progression of the chosen piece of music, and then applying the Colour of Music palette to the root note of each chord. The width of the colour bar corresponds to the length of time each chord/colour is featured in the piece of music.

"I like the idea of visually exposing a song, and this is the reason for creating a framework that enables this process, which I suppose feeds into my on-going interest into visual and sonic art."

"I chose ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ by Bright Eyes track as I love this time of year, I can get more excited than my kids at times, but this song is such a twisted take on the season to be jolly. Fragile, like a hangover that can only be cured with painkillers and a mince pie."
