Conversation in Creativity: Mike Pickering

To coincide with their exclusive DJ appearance at Vintage by the Sea Festival, we are pleased to announce a very special Conversation in Creativity Event featuring Hacienda legends Mike Pickering and Dave Haslam.

Although best-known as a founder member of M People, Pickering has had a long and varied career in the music business. Formerly a chef and a roadie for Dire Straits, he was a saxophonist in Quando Quango and in the respected house act, T-Coy. His break came when, as a DJ at the legendary Haçienda club in Manchester (Nude, Hot & Shine nights), he became involved in the late 80s ‘Madchester’ scene that sustained influence on UK pop music for years to come. Pickering soon became an A&R man for the Factory Records, signing James and the Happy Mondays. Shortly after this, he became a co-director of the Manchester-based Deconstruction Records.  Pickering now works as A&R within the Columbia label of Sony BMG where he A&Rs The Gossip, Calvin Harris, Kasabian, and The Ting Ting.

The event will be hosted by Dave Haslam who DJed over 450 times at the Haçienda and has since performed sets worldwide He attended Joy Division's last ever show, Sonic Youth slept on his floor; Tony Wilson threatened to shoot him; he took John Peel to see Public Enemy; and cooked cauliflower cheese for Morrissey. He's written for the The Guardian, NME, The Times, The London Review of Books, The New Statesman, and Time Out. He's currently finishing his forth book. Previous titles include 'Manchester England' (1999) - a ground-breaking study of Manchester’s musical and cultural history. He also appears regularly on radio and TV as a cultural commentator. He has previously hosted live onstage in-conversations for Creative Lancashire and his own 'Close-Up' events with Jeremy Deller, Jonathan Franzen, Neneh Cherry, Nile Rogers, Alistair Campbell and Will Self to name a few.

Conversations in Creativity
In 2011 Creative Lancashire launched Conversations in Creativity - a network and series of events where creative's from across the principles, crafts and disciplines explore how inspiration from around the world informs process. Previous events include; Wayne & Gerardine Hemingway, Gary Aspden (Adidas Originals), Pete Fowler (Artist Film Maker), Donna Wilson (Designer), Nick Park (Aardman), Lemn Sissay (Poet) and Jeanette Winterson (Author), Simon Aldred (Cherry Ghost) and I am Kloot.

The Conversation in Creativity event is part of the Vintage By The Sea Festival and preceded exclusive DJ sets from Mike Pickering and Dave Haslam at the Warehouse, part of a multi-venue celebration of Northern Musical heritage and will cover all decades and musical influence (9pm-2am on Saturday 6th September Morecambe’s Winter Gardens

Vintage By the Sea, led by Wayne, Gerardine and Jack Hemingway and the Vintage Festival team, is to return to Morecambe for a second year this September.

From 6th – 7th September, the fantastic setting of Morecambe’s seafront provides the backdrop and be transformed into a multi-venue playground where, visitors can ‘learn the dances’, take in specially curated live performances, exclusive DJ sets, catwalk shows, brilliantly conceived food and cocktails, or take advantage of the decade specific hair and beauty makeovers and all the wonderful vintage shopping on offer. The Festival will offer a packed weekend, with something for everyone, combining a mix of dancing, music, fashion, glamour, film, classic cars, delicious street food, creative workshops, kid’s activities, street theatre, a vintage fairground, vintage bus tours and an eclectic vintage and up-cycled market place to browse vintage treasures.

As well as the ticketed dance events the weekend’s programme will provide a free fringe festival of entertainment for local residents and visitors to the town to experience one of the most unique places to celebrate all things vintage.
